Vineyard and terroir

The production area encompasses Poggiridenti and Tresivio, east of Sondrio along the valley toward Tirano. The vineyard zone is sheltered from winds travelling through the valley by two rocky promontories, Monte Calvario and Monte Paradiso. Its small terraces become particularly hot on sunny summer days, giving rise to the name Inferno.

Grapes

95% Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca. Merlot and the local Brugnola make up the remainder.

Vinification

The grapes are destemmed and pressed, and the must undergoes alcoholic fermentation with the skins. Punch-downs and pump-overs keep the cap immersed. Maceration lasts approximately 15–20 days at a controlled 28–30°C. Clarifying rackings follow.

Ageing

The wine matures for two years in oak barrels and completes its maturation with six months in bottle.

Technical data

Alcohol: 12.70–13.20% vol. Total acidity: 5.20–5.90 g/L. pH: 3.5–3.7. Dry extract: 26–30 g/L.

Tasting profile

Ruby red with garnet reflections, developing brick-coloured nuances with age. The broad, persistent aroma opens with floral notes reminiscent of violet, followed by spice and woodland berries. The palate is pleasantly tannic, warm and harmonious, with good softness and sensations of liquorice and blackberry.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 17–18°C. Pair primarily with white or red meat. After four to five years of ageing, it also becomes a suitable partner for game.

Stored horizontally in a cool, dark cellar at a constant temperature, it can mature for seven to eight years.
