Vineyard and terroir

Stracacio is produced from its namesake vineyard in Contrada Spescia, Cupramontana, next to the Gaiospino vineyard. A distinctive Verdicchio selection identified through massal selection was propagated and planted here in 2003. The site lies at 350 m a.s.l., faces west and has predominantly calcareous-marl soil.

The long rows are maintained with spontaneous grass cover and no fertilisation. Vines are pruned manually to single Guyot, with both manual and mechanical management beneath the rows.

Grapes

Verdicchio from a single vineyard, originating from a propagated massal selection.

Vinification

The vineyard has pronounced variation in ripeness. Picking begins once a balance is reached between slightly underripe bunches and grapes already tending towards raisining. After destemming and crushing, the must remains on the skins for four to seven days, depending on the vintage.

Stracacio is the cellar’s natural pied de cuve: as the first must to begin spontaneous fermentation, it supplies the indigenous-yeast culture used to initiate fermentation in the other wines. Once separated from the skins, the must completes fermentation in stainless steel and concrete.

Ageing

The wine ages for two years in stainless steel on its fine lees and then for at least six months in bottle.

Tasting profile

The nose combines ripe yellow-fleshed fruit, citrus and flowers, followed by medicinal herbs and sweet spices. With extended bottle ageing, these aromas develop refined hydrocarbon nuances.

The palate is complex, creamy and enveloping, sharpened by energetic freshness and vibrant savouriness. It closes with tension and a dry, almond-like finish. Skin contact contributes colour, light tannins and additional aromatic complexity. The overall impression is deep, substantial and vigorous, balancing softness with firmer structural elements.

Serving and pairing

Serve with richly structured dishes, savoury fish soups, elaborate white-meat preparations, medium-aged cheeses, formaggio di fossa or blue cheeses. The ageing potential is at least 10 years. Available formats are 0.75 L and 1.5 L.

Label / history

Stracacio was particularly dear to Lucio and, together with Gaiospino, became one of the wines most closely associated with Fattoria Coroncino beyond the estate.
