Vineyard and terroir
Stragaio comes from the Stracacio vineyard in Contrada Spescia, Cupramontana, beside the Gaiospino vineyard. The west-facing site stands at 250 m a.s.l., on predominantly calcareous-marl soil, and was planted in 2005.
Spontaneous grass cover is maintained without fertilisation. The vines are manually pruned to both double and single Guyot, while work beneath the rows is carried out manually and mechanically.
Grapes
Verdicchio from the single Stracacio vineyard.
Vinification
The grapes are picked at full ripeness, destemmed and crushed. They remain in contact with the skins for three to seven days according to the vintage. Once the wine is separated from the skins, the latter part of fermentation proceeds in 500 L French-oak tonneaux, comprising both new and previously used vessels.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in French-oak tonneaux on its fine lees, followed by 12 months in bottle. Its identity combines the assertive varietal expression created by skin contact with the development produced by fermentation and extended maturation in oak.
Tasting profile
Elegant fruit and floral aromas lead into the sweet tones of oak, before taking an unexpected herbal turn. The palate has substantial structure and a refined tannic weave, heightened by vibrant savouriness. The finish is notably persistent, carrying polished oak nuances into a balsamic close.
Skin maceration provides firmness, while the vineyard and oak maturation contribute lightness and complex structure. Vintage conditions have a particularly strong influence on the wine’s expression.
Serving and pairing
Pair with filled pasta, creamy risottos featuring land-based ingredients, elaborate white meats such as rabbit in porchetta, and medium- or long-aged cheeses. The wine can age for at least 10 years and is available in 0.75 L, 1.5 L and 3 L formats.
