Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow on the hills of Nimis, in sandy marl soils of Eocene origin. The vineyards sit at 400 metres above sea level on terraced, gently sloping hills. The Alpine peaks protect the area, which borders Austria and Slovenia, from harsh, cold winds. The Adriatic Sea tempers hot summer weather and softens sharp winter temperature changes. Sea breezes blow north towards the hills at dawn and return south towards the coast in the evening; this movement of air limits the spread of fungal diseases and keeps the vines healthy. Rainfall tends to be heavy but brief, and together with the bright, sunny climate it gives good conditions for ripening juicy, aromatic grapes.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested at full ripeness in late September. Fermentation takes place in barrels of French oak from Allier.
Ageing
The wine spends at least a year in the same Allier oak barrels, then several more months in bottle to reach balance.
Tasting profile
Fragrant aroma; full, creamy palate.
