Vineyard and terroir
Selected Chardonnay grapes come from vineyards in Niscemi (CL), at 100 m a.s.l. The vines are trained to spurred cordon and yield 55 quintals per hectare. Published specifications give a density of 5,900–6,000 plants per hectare. The soil is described both as loose and as medium-bodied with a rich structure.
Grapes
100% Chardonnay, made from a selection of hand-picked fruit.
Vinification
Harvest takes place in mid-August. Vinification and temperature-controlled fermentation are carried out in steel. Malolactic fermentation is completed.
Ageing
Published specifications differ: six or eight months in barriques, followed by six or eight months in bottle. The longer programme is described as ageing in 80% new and 20% second-use barriques.
Technical data
The classification appears as both Sicilia DOC Superiore and IGT Terre Siciliane. Available in 0.75 L bottles. First vintage: 2023. The style is a structured, age-worthy white.
Tasting profile
A fairly intense straw-yellow colour. Yellow peach and pineapple shape the aroma. The palate is fresh, creamy and crisp, with a pleasantly savoury finish. The overall character is dynamic and enveloping.
Serving and pairing
Pairs with shellfish and seafood, fish-based dishes and white meats.
Label / history
The I Putti del Serpotta line is dedicated to Giacomo Serpotta, the Sicilian sculptor active between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and to the cherubs associated with his work.
