Vineyard and terroir
The grapes grow in two sections of the east-facing Sambuca vineyard in southern Sicily. The fruit receives the first warmth of the morning sun after the cool night; these temperature changes help the berries accumulate nutrients. Rich soils, southern sunshine and cool sea breezes allow full ripeness by mid-September.
Vinification
Harvest takes place in two stages. The first portion ferments and macerates with continuous stirring for 15–18 days to extract colour and tannins from the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation. The second portion is picked slightly later and undergoes 15 days of fermentation and maceration. The two wines are blended before bottling.
Ageing
The first portion matures for 18–20 months in French and American oak barrels. The later-picked portion spends 18–20 months in stainless-steel tanks.
Tasting profile
The wine is complex, velvety and elegant. The later-picked fruit contributes ripe black-fruit aromas and an additional layer of complexity.
Label / history
The wine received gold medals at the 2018 Berliner Wein Trophy and from Vinibuoni d’Italia in 2018, followed by a silver medal at Mundus Vini in 2020.
