Vineyard and terroir

The grapes come from a vineyard between Montegrosso d’Asti and Agliano Terme. The Viberti family acquired the site in 2021 with the aim of reviving grape overripening as a means of producing a dry red wine with concentrated aromas and structure.

Grapes

100% Barbera.

Vinification

Harvest began on 16 September. The fruit was picked by hand into small 8 kg crates and subsequently dried until it had lost as much as 15% of its weight, concentrating aroma and structure. The grapes were then gently pressed with the stems. Alcoholic fermentation proceeded in horizontal submerged-cap fermenters until the sugars were completely depleted, producing a dry profile.

The wine was transferred after alcoholic fermentation to lightly toasted 1,000-litre oak barrels, where malolactic fermentation took place.

Ageing

After malolactic fermentation, the wine continued ageing in the same oak barrels on its fine lees for 20 months. Four bâtonnages were carried out during this period to develop roundness and complexity.

Vintage notes

The 2022 growing season brought above-average temperatures and limited rainfall. Vine stress resulted in small berries and clusters, while the fruit remained healthy, ripened early and developed a high sugar concentration. The overall harvest period lasted approximately one month, without following the customary staggered sequence among the different grape varieties.

Label / history

The wine’s name commemorates the birth in 2022 of Jacopo and Tommaso, the twin sons of Claudio Viberti. “ColleJato” is an affectionate evolution of the vineyard’s original name, ColleMolizzo, and a tribute to the children and to life’s precious things.
