Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
Feudo di Mezzo is a cru from Contrada Feudo di Mezzo in Castiglione di Sicilia. The wine is drawn from a 1.5-hectare selection on Etna’s northern slopes at 670 metres. The alberello-trained vines are more than 100 years old and grow in sandy, mineral-rich volcanic soil. Planting density is 4,500 vines per hectare and yield is 20 quintals per hectare.
Grapes
100% Nerello Mascalese.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand in the second half of October. Fermentation occurs spontaneously through yeasts naturally present on the fruit, at 28–30°C. Skin maceration lasts 15 days. Malolactic fermentation takes place spontaneously during spring.
Ageing
The wine matures for 18 months in a 10-hectolitre cask and used tonneaux, followed by at least six months in bottle.
Technical data
Etna Rosso D.O.C. Alcohol: 14.5%. Production: 1,800 bottles.
Tasting profile
Deep ruby red. The intensely fruited aromatic profile brings together cherry and blackcurrant with ferrous and balsamic nuances. The palate is decisive, with a finely woven, elegant tannic structure that contributes pronounced savouriness and persistence.
