Vineyard and terroir
The Sangiovese grows at 280–400 metres above sea level. Frank Grace rediscovered the neglected Volano vineyards near Panzano and, with Gerhard Hirmer, restored them.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested entirely by hand from late September to early October. Maceration lasts 20 days at 28–30 °C. Oenologist Franco Bernabei organised the estate’s winemaking operation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 11 months in Slavonian and French oak barrels.
Label / history
The winery takes its name from the Grace family and a nineteenth-century windmill on the estate. The mill appears in a sculpture of two men carrying a grapevine that stands in front of the cellar, and it is also depicted on the wine labels.
American businessman Frank Grace and German banker Gerhard Hirmer restored the vineyards and built a modern winery within five years. Their collaboration with Franco Bernabei shaped the estate’s development.
