Vineyard and terroir
Tenuta Valdifalco’s vineyards grow among olive trees and receive a light ocean breeze. The vines are 22 years old on average.
Grapes
Scansano Sangiovese remained isolated from other vines for more than 150 years; its only encounter with Alicante occurred in 1700.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand into 16 kg crates and sorted by hand at the winery. Spontaneous fermentation is followed by malolactic fermentation. During fermentation, délestage is performed one to three times daily for five days, while the cap is punched down once daily for 17 days.
Ageing
The wine matures for 8–12 months, with 90% in steel tanks and 10% in small wooden barrels. After blending, it rests for a further two months in stainless-steel tanks.
Tasting profile
Bright and aromatic.
Vintage notes
The 2020 growing season was very warm and dry. A mild winter was followed by a spring of sunny days and sufficient rainfall. The hot, dry summer brought the grapes rapidly to phenolic ripeness, while cool nights during ripening preserved their acidity and bright aromatic character. Harvest took place in good weather at the end of September, and the grapes and resulting wines were of excellent quality.
Label / history
The local name Morellino dates to the Middle Ages and may derive either from the Morello horses once used to pull carts or from the dark berries known as moro. The 2020 vintage was bottled on 20 July 2021, with 9,000 bottles produced.
