Storia
1807: the Falletti and Juliette Colbert
The story of Marchesi di Barolo began in 1807, when the Italian marquis Carlo Tancredi Falletti married the Parisian Juliette Colbert di Maulévrier, great-granddaughter of a foreign minister under King Louis XIV. Juliette Colbert lengthened the fermentation of the must and extended the wine's aging in oak barrels, producing a deep, complex wine that expressed the potential of its terroir.
Alongside winemaking she devoted herself to charitable work. Before her death she arranged for a charitable institute to be established in Palazzo Barolo in Turin.
The Abbona family
The history of the Falletti family later became intertwined with that of the Abbona family, whose "Cavalier Felice Abbona e Figli" wine cellars stood near the Castle of Barolo. Pietro Abbona, born around the time the institute was founded, worked in the family business with his sisters Celestina and Maria and his brother Ernesto. The Abbona family later acquired the Falletti family's cellars.
Today
