Storia
1860
Murgo was founded when Senator Luigi Gravina gave the Scammacca del Murgo family around 30 hectares of vineyards on Mount Etna.
Later transformation
More than a hundred years after the founding, on the same land, Baron Emanuele Scammacca del Murgo began transforming the estate into what is now the modern Tenuta San Michele farm, which today sits at the heart of the business. Under his direction the Scammacca family became one of the pioneers of modern winemaking in the region, with a focus on native grape varieties, volcanic terroirs and environmentally responsible practices.
Today
New generations of the Scammacca del Murgo family now run the business. Murgo's wines are widely exported and regularly receive high scores from international critics. The winery today operates across Etna, Sicily and Lazio, producing wine and olive oil, growing citrus fruit and vegetables, and offering tastings, accommodation and cultural events at the family's properties: Tenuta San Michele, Tenuta Gelso Bianco, La Francescana Estate and Scammacca Palace.
Terroir
The estate lies on Mount Etna, on volcanic terroir. The winery emphasizes the expression of Etna's terroir, describing volcanic energy, freshness and minerality as qualities that come through in its wines.
Vinificazione
The Scammacca family's approach centers on native grape varieties, volcanic terroirs and environmentally responsible practices, developed as the family pioneered modern winemaking on Mount Etna.
Murgo produces wine and olive oil, and also grows citrus fruit and vegetables across its properties in Etna, Sicily and Lazio. Its winemaking brings together heritage and modern methods, with particular emphasis on expressing Etna's volcanic terroir.
Filosofia
The Scammacca family holds that its wines should express Etna's terroir, with volcanic energy, freshness and minerality coming through in every wine.
