Vineyard and terroir
The grapes are grown in the municipality of Riesi, in the province of Caltanissetta. The estate’s vineyards lie on hills exposed to the southern sun and cooled by strong breezes from the nearby sea. They cover 320 hectares, of which 180 hectares are planted with young vines.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested in the first week of August. Fermentation begins in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 20 °C and continues for 20 days in 350-litre, medium-toast oak barrels.
Ageing
The wine remains in the same oak barrels for an extended period of ageing on the lees, followed by several months in bottle.
Tasting profile
The aroma is bright and expressive. The palate is rich and well balanced.
Label / history
The estate once belonged to the aristocratic Branciforte and Lanza di Scalea dynasties. Ambrogio Branciforte, appointed the first Sicilian viceroy in 1543, was granted the title of Prince of Butera by King Philip II of Spain. The title and lands passed to Girolamo Lanza in 1895. The Zonin family acquired Feudo Principi di Butera in 1997.
