Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The Barbera comes from vineyards surrounding Villa Pattono in Costigliole d’Asti. The wine expresses its place of origin in the Monferrato district.
Grapes
100% Barbera.
Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand in September, then destemmed and pressed. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vessels. Skin contact lasts approximately two weeks, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel.
Tasting profile
The colour is an intense, bright red. Ripe plum leads the aroma, set against spicy pepper and liquorice notes. The palate is full-flavoured, structured, pleasing and elegant, with good persistence.
Serving and pairing
Pair with substantial first courses and red meats. The wine is suited to fairly long bottle ageing.
Label / history
Villa Pattono takes its name from the old country residence of the Ratti family's ancestors in Costigliole d’Asti. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the family was already making a house wine from Barbera grown around the villa. The continuation of that tradition led to this more structured expression, whose first vintage was produced in 1982.
Renato Ratti created the historic “soldier” label in tribute to the heroism of Piedmontese regiments during the eighteenth century. The wine is presented in the Albeisa bottle, named after Alba and created by Renato Ratti in 1973 to identify the wines and distinctive character of their territory. Villa Pattono now operates as a relais with 13 rooms and suites, a spa and a restaurant.
