Vineyard and terroir

Effe’55 comes from a 2 ha estate vineyard at Casanuova di Pietrafitta in Castellina in Chianti. At an average altitude of 580 m a.s.l., the vines face north-east and root in medium-textured soils marked by Alberese, calcareous-clay layers, sand and abundant rocky material. This combination contributes depth, savoury character and elegance.

Part of the wine comes from one of the estate’s oldest plantings, established in the 1970s and now more than 50 years old. The specifications identify vine ages of 25 and 50 years. These mature, deeply rooted vines produce low yields with concentrated fruit. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, average yield is 1 kg per vine, and the vines are spur pruned.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese, specifically the Sangiovese Grosso clone identified as the Montalcino biotype.

Vinification

Harvest takes place in mid-October. Maceration and fermentation proceed in stainless-steel tanks for 12–20 days at a controlled temperature of 28°C, using native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in stainless steel.

Ageing

The wine spends 15 months in tonneaux and a further six months in 23 and 32 hl barrels, followed by at least 12 months in bottle.

Technical data

Stabilization is performed only by natural methods, and filtration is deliberately broad. Natural sediment may therefore develop after extended bottle ageing without impairing the sensory character.

Tasting profile

The bouquet features small red berries, including Marasca cherries preserved in alcohol, together with chocolate-like berry nuances and well-integrated wood. The palate is full-bodied, warm and powerful, with a pronounced tannic weave that retains drinkability and elegance. Acidity and minerality give the long finish freshness. The wine is characterized as long-lived.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16°C with stewed meat, game or mature cheeses.
