Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from various estate plots in Loc. Castagnoli. Together they cover 63 hectares around the medieval fortress and the village from which the estate takes its name. The vineyards differ in elevation, exposure and soil composition, extending from 340 metres above sea level to the estate’s higher sites.
The soils are correspondingly diverse and typically contain abundant stones. They include Alberese, limestone zones, Macigno del Chianti and other sandstones, schistose argillites—predominantly Galestro—and some clay sequences. Exposures vary across the property. Plantings range from new vineyards to parcels 35 years old, at a density of 5,000 vines per hectare. Both spur-pruned and cane-pruned training systems are used. Average yield is 1.5 kg per vine.
Grapes
Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Colorino, supplemented by other varieties.
Vinification
Harvest takes place in October. The wine macerates for approximately 10–12 days at about 28°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel.
Ageing
The wine matures for at least one year in traditional Chianti barrels and then spends a further three months in stainless steel, followed by six months of bottle ageing.
Technical data
Chianti Classico DOCG. The vineyard area is 63 hectares, and annual production is approximately 250,000 bottles.
