Vineyard and terroir

Le Lucére occupies an east-facing site on the eastern side of Montalcino at 280–310 metres above sea level. The soils derive from Pliocene marine deposits: clay mixed with yellowish-brown silty sand and medium- to fine-grained sandstone, with thin layers of residual Pietraforte conglomerate. Planting density is 4,500 vines per hectare and the grape yield is 6,000 kg per hectare.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

The grapes are picked by hand at the beginning of October. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. Two days of cold maceration at 10°C precede 10–12 days of maceration at 25–28°C during and after fermentation. Malolactic fermentation takes place in cement vats.

Ageing

Maturation begins with 12 months in barriques and tonneaux, followed by 12–16 months in 20–30 hL oak casks. The wine then receives 10 months of bottle ageing.

Technical data

Alcohol is 14.5% vol.; production is 8,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

Ruby red with reflections approaching garnet. The intense, refined and elegant bouquet combines cherries preserved in alcohol with spice; the current presentation specifically evokes cinnamon and cloves, while the technical description also introduces Mediterranean aromatic herbs. Dense, silky tannins shape a finely textured palate with excellent body, harmony, persistence and close correspondence between aroma and flavour.

Vintage notes

The current presentation is the 2021 vintage. The selected technical document is named for 2021 but carries a 2020 vintage heading internally.
