Vineyard and terroir
The Riserva is a barrel selection of the finest wine from the Le Lucére vineyard and is made only in excellent vintages. The vineyard lies on the eastern side of Montalcino at 280–310 metres above sea level and faces east. Its Pliocene marine soils combine clay, yellowish-brown silty sand and medium- to fine-grained sandstone, with thin strata of residual Pietraforte conglomerate. Planting density is 4,500 vines per hectare and yield is 6,000 kg of grapes per hectare.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand at the beginning of October. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. Maceration comprises two cold days at 10°C, then 10–12 days at 25–28°C during and after fermentation. Malolactic fermentation takes place in cement vats.
Ageing
The first 12 months are spent in barriques and tonneaux, followed by 12–16 months in 20–30 hL oak casks. Bottle ageing lasts 22 months.
Technical data
Alcohol is 14.5% vol.; production totals 4,000 bottles.
Tasting profile
Ruby red with nuances tending toward garnet. The intense, refined and complex perfume centres on Morello cherry, underlaid by cinnamon and clove. The palate begins with structure, fullness and roundness before moving into a persistent finish carried by a dense, silky tannic weave and a harmonious return of the aromatic notes.
Vintage notes
The current presentation is the 2019 vintage. Riserva is produced only in vintages considered excellent.
