Foundation (mid-19th century)

Brothers Giovanni Battista and Gaetano founded a family winery in the small town of Quinto di Valpantena, north of Verona. Their path into wine began when they met Mr. Guyot, a leading figure in the wine industry of the time. From the start they took an innovative approach to growing grapes and handling the harvest, introducing new cultivation and winemaking techniques. They were the first to sell their wine in bottles rather than in the oak barrels more commonly used at the time.

Recognition (1888)

Almost 30 years after the winery was founded, the Academy of Agriculture, Arts and Commerce in Verona assessed the brothers' work from both a scientific and a practical perspective and presented them with a special gold award in 1888. Bertani went on to become a model for both family and commercial winemaking in the Verona area. The winery continues to take part in competitions and exhibitions and to develop new technologies.

Today

Tenuta Santa Maria di Gaetano Bertani is run by Gaetano Bertani, the founder's great-grandson, together with his sons Giovanni and Guglielmo.
