Storia
Sorelle de Nicola was founded in 1964 by Maria Feyles and her son-in-law, Antonio de Nicola. Their first investment was the Montesommo vineyard, a plot in the village of Neive at the heart of the Barbaresco production area. They gradually acquired more sites across the Langhe hills, and the winery now owns more than 7 ha of vineyards.
The Montesommo and Borghese vineyards were planted with Nebbiolo in 1971, and the Serra vineyard in Monforte d'Alba was planted with Nebbiolo in 2004.
Terroir
The vineyards are spread across several villages in the Langhe hills around Alba, in both the Barbaresco and Barolo areas.
- Neive (Barbaresco area): Montesommo and Borghese face southwest.
- Monforte d'Alba: Serra faces southwest at 380 m above sea level, on a mix of clay and sand.
- Novello (Barolo area): Venola faces southeast, on soils of layered tuff and quartz sand.
- Monforte d'Alba: Manzoni lies within the Barbera d'Alba and Dolcetto d'Alba production areas.
Vinificazione
All grapes come from the winery's own vineyards. The vines are trained high and spaced well apart, and the vine rows are arranged to give the grapes as much sunlight as possible. Weeds are controlled by light ploughing, with no herbicides.
The winery has stayed committed to tradition in the cellar. Maceration is long, for greater extraction. The wines are aged in medium-sized Slavonian oak casks, without barriques. Cellar work is kept to a minimum so that the wines can develop naturally. Average production is around 50,000 bottles a year.
Filosofia
The winery says it has always remained committed to tradition, in the vineyard and in the cellar. Its stated aim is to make exceptional wines that are a true expression of the grapes and their local terroir.
