Vineyard and terroir

Mozia is a small island in the Marsala lagoon, a few kilometres from the coast of Marsala. Vines were first planted there in the early nineteenth century. Approximately 13 ha are now cultivated among archaeological remains preserved by the Whitaker Foundation.

The traditional bush vines are adapted to the island’s persistent winds and limited water supply. Marsalese pruning intertwines two long shoots into small arches, helping protect the fruit from sea breezes and intense sunlight. Planting density is 3,300 vines/ha and the 2025 yield was 53 q/ha.

The flat island has loose, sandy soils formed from ancient marine seabeds. Limestone produces an alkaline soil reaction of pH 8.2. Rainwater collects below ground, creating a freshwater reserve without mixing with salt water.

Grapes

100% Grillo.

Vinification

The 2025 fruit was harvested on 11 August. Fermentation took place in stainless steel at 16–18°C for 15 days. Malolactic fermentation was prevented.

Ageing

Five months on the lees in stainless steel.

Technical data

2025: 13% alcohol; pH 3.20; total acidity 5.81 g/L; residual sugar 0.7 g/L; total extract 22.9 g/L.

Vintage notes

The 2025 technical sheet describes a winter with good rainfall that restored soil-water reserves, followed by a mild, wetter-than-average spring and a summer without extreme heat. The fruit reached excellent ripeness and was healthy at harvest.
