Storia
Acquisition in Maremma — 2000
Prince Girolamo Strozzi acquired Tenuta I Massi in 2000 as part of the family's development in Maremma. The property lies near the village of Montemassi, within the municipality of Roccastrada in the province of Grosseto. Its elevated position opens onto a broad Maremma landscape.
The vineyards were devoted to Sangiovese, Petit Verdot, Ancellotta and additional experimental varieties. Cabernet Sauvignon and Montepulciano were subsequently documented among the grapes grown at I Massi, while Vermentino used for Arabesque comes principally from the estate.
The new cellar — 2004
Construction of a new winery was completed in 2004. Its architecture was designed to blend into the surrounding landscape. The facility became the vinification cellar for grapes from I Massi and also for Momi, a Maremma blend assembled from fruit grown across the family's Maremma properties.
Terroir
Tenuta I Massi lies in the province of Grosseto, in the municipality of Roccastrada and close to the village of Montemassi. The property occupies the hills of Alta Maremma and looks across an expansive Maremma panorama.
Petit Verdot is singled out as particularly well suited to the hills of Alta Maremma, where it can express its varietal character fully. No estate-specific figures are given for elevation, exposition, rainfall or temperature, and no detailed geological or soil profile is supplied.
Vinificazione
A purpose-built winery was completed at Tenuta I Massi in 2004. The building was conceived as part of the landscape rather than as a visually separate industrial structure.
The cellar handles vinification of fruit grown at I Massi and has also been used to vinify Momi, which combines grapes from the family's Maremma estates. Temperature control is employed during white vinification of Vermentino from I Massi. An earlier description of Momi production records maturation in oak barriques for approximately three months.
No broader estate-wide protocol is defined for grape reception, sorting, crushing, fermentation vessels, yeast selection, malolactic fermentation, extraction, clarification, filtration, sulphur use or bottling.
Filosofia
Tenuta I Massi developed around Prince Girolamo Strozzi's interest in Maremma and his stated commitment to creating innovative wines there. The vineyard composition reflects that direction: established Tuscan grapes are cultivated alongside Petit Verdot, Ancellotta and other experimental varieties.
The 2004 cellar expresses a parallel architectural principle. Its design was intended to become part of the surrounding countryside, linking the production facility visually with the estate landscape.
