Vineyard and terroir
La Ghirlanda comes from the Ghirlanda and Presoni vineyards at Mocenni Estate in the Chianti Classico area of Tuscany. The vines are 15–20 years old and grow at about 450 m above sea level on Alberese and Galestro soils. Training combines spur-pruned cordon and Guyot. The Ghirlanda vineyard is surrounded by a wood of the same name.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
Carefully selected clusters are harvested by hand, destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel vats at a controlled 28–30°C, with maceration lasting 16–18 days.
Ageing
After malolactic fermentation, the wine is transferred to 50-hl oak barrels and matures for about 12 months. Further cellar refinement follows after bottling and before release.
Tasting profile
Intense ruby red. The broad, complex bouquet has distinct floral, fresh-fruit and spice notes. The palate is vigorous and vibrant, with an acidic vein integrated into a generous, balanced and savoury structure. The tannins are elegant and soft, and the finish and aftertaste are persistent and lingering.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18°C after opening the bottle at least one hour beforehand. Traditional pairings include roast or cured red meat, game and mature cheeses; Mediterranean first courses are another option. Store horizontally at 15–17°C away from light.
Label / history
Ghirlanda means “garland”: a crown, ornament and sign of celebration. The name also belongs to the wood at Mocenni Estate that surrounds the wine’s vineyard.
