Storia
2020 — Acquisition by Cristiana Bettili
Tenuta Poggio Marchino joined Cristiana Bettili’s collection of estates in 2020 through the acquisition of the Tuscan property. It became the Toscana component of a portfolio united by certified organic production and an environmental approach applied both to the historic family holdings and to recently acquired land.
Terroir
Tenuta Poggio Marchino is located in Toscana, Italy. More precise geographical, topographical, climatic, and geological particulars are not documented in the accessible estate material.
Vinificazione
Tenuta Poggio Marchino follows the certified organic model adopted throughout Cristiana Bettili’s estates and recently acquired land. Compliance is controlled by BIOS (BIOS srl, Marostica, Vicenza), an external body authorized by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies, with checks extending across the supply chain.
The organic program excludes synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and genetically modified organisms, with the stated aim of protecting the environment and encouraging natural biodiversity. Its wider principles are the development of farms as agricultural systems drawing on local resources, preservation of natural soil fertility, avoidance of pollution caused by farming techniques, and production of high-quality food in sufficient quantities. Green manuring and soil ploughing are presented as examples within this framework.
Vineyard protection relies on products of organic origin. Sulfur is used preventively against powdery mildew and copper against downy mildew. Because copper can accumulate in the soil, reduce biological activity, harm earthworms and affect beneficial insects, trials seek to keep its use well below the cited legal ceiling of 6 kg/ha per year. The program employs bacterial antagonists against downy mildew and tests natural citrus-based alternatives for their antifungal, bacteriostatic, antioxidant, and foliar-strengthening effects. Pyrethrum and Bacillus thuringiensis are used against harmful insects.
Filosofia
Cristiana Bettili’s central objective is to produce quality wine while respecting the environment. Organic farming is presented not as a response to a market trend, but as a means of giving consumers a verifiable guarantee that production respects the environment, supports natural biodiversity, and excludes synthetic agricultural chemicals and genetically modified organisms.
The approach links quality of life with the environmental consequences of business decisions. Its agricultural priorities are local-resource use, preservation of natural soil fertility, prevention of farming-related pollution, and the production of nutritious, high-quality agricultural products. Independent certification and continuing controls provide the formal guarantee behind these principles.
