Vineyard and terroir
The approximately 2 ha Contessa Luisa vineyard occupies a clay-rich, deep-soiled hill. It is Villa Calcinaia’s only west-facing plot and receives the warmth of the afternoon sun. Planted by Ferrante Capponi in 1959, it is now the estate’s oldest vineyard. In keeping with contemporary practice, American rootstocks were planted first in hand-dug holes and later grafted with the varieties cultivated on the farm.
Grapes
Sangiovese is the principal variety, accompanied by small quantities of other, unspecified varieties.
Vinification
The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented for 18 days in open 500-litre tonneaux.
Ageing
The wine matures for 24 months in 5-litre tonneaux and cement vats.
Label / history
Ferrante Capponi named the vineyard’s associated farm for his mother, Luisa Vonwiller.
