Vineyard and terroir
The Viviani family farms six hectares in Mazzano, in the southeastern part of the Valpolicella area. The hillside vineyards stand at 350–450 m above sea level, where air circulation and low humidity provide suitable conditions for grapes destined for Recioto, Valpolicella and Amarone. The vines are 10–80 years old and grow in limestone soil containing fossilized pink coral. No pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers are used; the estate participates in European Union Directive 2078 for environmentally friendly agriculture.
Vinification
The grapes are picked by hand in the second week of October and carefully sorted. They are dried for five months before winemaking begins in spring. After gentle pressing, they macerate and ferment spontaneously for 40 days in zinc-lined concrete tanks. Production is carried out almost entirely by hand.
Ageing
The wine matures for more than three years in French and Slavonian oak barrels of various sizes.
Vintage notes
Spring 2019 in Veneto was cool and rainy, with record-low temperatures in April and May. Summer was hot, with heatwaves reaching 38 °C and hail during July and August. Despite the changeable conditions, harvesting began as early as September. Valpolicella wines from the vintage showed good colour, bright fruit aromas and high acidity.
