Erbaluce di Caluso/Caluso

Also called Caluso

4 wineries and 9 wines. North of Turin, the glaciers that once came down from the Aosta valley left a great bowl of moraine hills in the Canavese, closed by the ridge of the Serra d'Ivrea. Across it, communes in the provinces of Turin, Biella and Vercelli grow Erbaluce, a white grape that suits the sandy, stony glacial soils and keeps a bright acidity in the wine. Vineyards lie between 200 and 500 metres. Read more ↓

About the appellation

About Erbaluce di Caluso

The traditional way of growing it is the pergola calusiese, with rows more than five metres apart and about a thousand vines a hectare, pruned to long canes because Erbaluce bears little fruit on its first few buds.

Few white grapes make as many styles. Erbaluce di Caluso — or Caluso — is a dry white, a sparkling wine that spends at least 15 months on its lees after a second fermentation in the bottle, and a passito from bunches laid on racks to dry until their sugar reaches at least 29 per cent. The passito ages 36 months from the first of November after the harvest, the Riserva 48. The wines were recognised as a DOC in 1967 and a DOCG in 2010.
