About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Matarocchio was conceived as the expression of one variety from one vineyard parcel at Tenuta Guado al Tasso. The estate occupies approximately 320 hectares of vineyards on the coastal plain enclosed by the hills of the Bolgheri amphitheatre in the Upper Maremma, around 100 km southwest of Florence. Nearby sea breezes moderate summer heat and winter cold and sustain high sunlight levels.

Grapes

100% Cabernet Franc.

Vinification

The 2022 Cabernet Franc was harvested by hand between 14 and 21 September. After meticulous berry-by-berry selection, the fruit was gently crushed. Alcoholic fermentation and maceration took place in stainless-steel tanks for 25 days at a controlled 28 °C. The wine was then transferred to second- and third-use French-oak barriques for malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

Maturation continued for 18 months in new French-oak barriques. Following tasting, the best barrels were selected and blended. The wine then rested in bottle for more than one year before release.

Tasting profile

Matarocchio 2022 is an intense ruby red. White pepper leads the aromatic profile, followed by sage, juniper, tobacco leaf, blackcurrant and violet. The palate is enveloping, intense and deep, with sweet, silky tannins supporting an elegant, balanced and persistent finish. It is already approachable but has excellent ageing potential.

Vintage notes

Low rainfall from late winter through much of summer 2022 accelerated budbreak, flowering, fruit set and véraison. Rain arriving from mid-August supported the crucial ripening phase. The dry conditions kept the berries healthy while restricting vegetative growth and berry size; August rainfall helped restore balance between sugars, acidity and fruit maturity while preserving pronounced varietal aromas.
