About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The wine takes its name from vineyards cultivated beside an ancient branch of the Roman consular road Via Flaminia, which extends from green Umbria toward Maremma. Shepherds once followed this route during the seasonal migration of their flocks and herds.
The vines are trained to spurred cordon at a density of 5,000–6,000 plants per hectare. Yields are 80–90 quintals per hectare, equivalent to 8–9 tonnes per hectare.
Grapes
70% Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino and 15% Merlot.
Vinification
Harvest takes place in September.
Ageing
The wine matures for 14 months in French oak barrels, followed by at least six months in bottle.
Technical data
Montefalco Rosso DOC. The first vintage was produced in 2007. Available formats are 0.375 L, 0.75 L and 1.5 L. Ageing potential is 6–8 years.
Tasting profile
Bright ruby red. The aroma combines Marasca cherry and small red berries with dark flowers, delicate herbaceous nuances and a pepper note. The palate is enveloping and full-bodied, with elegance provided by fine-grained tannins.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 18–20 °C. Pair with richly flavoured soups, first courses dressed with meat ragù, or grilled meats.
Label / history
The name recalls the historic Via Flaminia route and its former role in the seasonal movement of shepherds, flocks and herds between Umbria and Maremma.
