Atzei

History

2021: creation of Atzei

The Atzei project was established in 2021 in the Mogoro area of Sardegna, in the province of Oristano. Atzei Vini S.r.l. was constituted that year as a wholly owned subsidiary within Fantini Group.

The project was conceived around Mogoro’s long winegrowing tradition and its comparatively secluded rural setting. Its identity connects the vineyards with local practices that remain part of the area’s everyday economy, including gentle horse ploughing and the production of traditional Sardinian tapestries.

Development of the range

Atzei developed a compact range based on Vermentino, Monica, Carignano and Cannonau. The current portfolio comprises the Saragat wines and Narù Monica-Carignano Isola dei Nuraghi IGT. An earlier presentation called the latter wine Aru Monica Isola dei Nuraghi IGT and linked its label to the nearby Nuraghe di Cuccurada; the current name is Narù.

Terroir

Atzei is based in the Mogoro area of Sardegna, in the province of Oristano. The winery and vineyards occupy an unspoilt valley containing archaeological remains and enclosed by the Giara highlands and Monte Arci.

Monte Arci is an extinct volcano overlooking Mogoro. Its volcanic ground nourishes the vineyard roots, while the valley’s surrounding mountains shape its microclimate. The soils are volcanic and contain phosphorus, potassium and magnesium; these conditions are associated with the intended complexity of the wines.

The winery has a direct view towards the Nuraghe di Cuccurada between Monte Arci’s summits. This stone structure historically served a military and defensive purpose and forms a prominent part of the valley’s cultural landscape.

The vineyard soils are ploughed gently with horses. This low-impact form of cultivation is presented as part of the continuity between Atzei’s work and the traditional rural practices of the Mogoro area.

Atzei’s cellar is located in the Mogoro valley. Gabriele Puligheddu is the winemaker. No single estate-wide vinification protocol is defined for the entire range.

Philosophy

Atzei’s identity is built around the relationship between winegrowing, the volcanic landscape of Monte Arci and the living traditions of Mogoro. The project presents the area’s unspoilt natural setting, slower rural rhythm and gentle horse cultivation as interconnected elements rather than as separate features.

Its range focuses on varieties associated with its Sardinian production area—Vermentino, Monica, Carignano and Cannonau—while its visual identity also draws on the archaeological landscape surrounding the winery.
