About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The vineyards lie on south-facing slopes at 350–650 m above sea level. The first vines here were planted in 2002.
Grapes
Sangiovese is the main variety, with small amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Ciliegiolo.
Vinification
The harvest date is chosen according to sugar levels, phenolic ripeness, total acidity and pH. Grapes are carried to the winery in small 20 kg crates. Vinification, including maceration, lasts 25 days in 100 hl steel vats at a controlled 22–26 °C.
Ageing
The wine matures for 3 months in stainless steel tanks, then 13 months in Slavonian oak barrels. After bottling it rests at least a further 30 days.
Tasting profile
Fruit is balanced with the character gained from oak.
Label / history
"San Leopardo" is a modern expression of the winemaking heritage of Rosso Matelica from the 1800s.
