History

Establishment in Radda in Chianti

Borgo Salcetino was established in 1996 by Valneo Livon and Tonino Livon, winegrowers from Friuli who decided to extend their viticultural and winemaking experience to the Chianti Classico territory, specifically Radda in Chianti.

Renewal of the property

The property extends across 30 hectares, including 15 hectares of vineyards. Its vineyards subsequently underwent a gradual but comprehensive renewal. The work addressed both planting density, now stated as 7,000 vines per hectare, and the estate’s varietal composition. Sangiovese and Canaiolo were retained as the native varieties, accompanied by experimental Merlot plantings.

The cellar also received extensive restoration while preserving the local character of the existing structure.

Terroir

Borgo Salcetino lies in the hilly territory of Radda in Chianti. Its slopes have soils with a galestro matrix. Differences in altitude across the hills encourage a pronounced temperature range between day and night, conditions associated with the estate’s production of red wines.

This work concerned planting density as well as varietal composition, bringing the vineyards to a stated density of 7,000 vines per hectare. Sangiovese and Canaiolo remain the native varieties, while Merlot has been introduced on an experimental basis.

The estate cellar underwent extensive restoration while retaining the local character of the original structure.

Philosophy

Borgo Salcetino’s development brings together continuity and measured experimentation. The vineyard renewal retained Sangiovese and Canaiolo while introducing Merlot experimentally, and the restoration of the cellar preserved the building’s local character. The project originated in Valneo and Tonino Livon’s decision to apply their Friulian winegrowing experience within the distinct setting of Radda in Chianti.
