History
Medieval architectural heritage
Barbaione’s principal villa dates to the 13th century. The villa and the estate’s other historic buildings preserve the property’s architectural connection with the surrounding Tuscan landscape, although no detailed chronology of their construction or later alteration is recorded.
Integration with the neighbouring estates
Barbaione adjoins Castello di Bossi and Tenuta di Renieri. The three neighbouring properties now form a single contiguous body, while Barbaione retains its identity as a distinct estate within Bacci Wines. Barbaione comprises 110 ha, including 17 ha of vineyards.
Contemporary ownership context
In 2019, entrepreneur and innovator Serg Bell became a minority partner in Bacci Wines, joining Marco Bacci’s broader project. Marco Bacci currently leads the wine group with assistance from his children.
Present-day production identity
Barbaione’s contemporary identity combines tradition and innovation through organic Metodo Classico sparkling wines. Sangiovese is used for this interpretation, with extended lees maturation forming a defining part of the production approach.
Terroir
Barbaione lies in the Chianti Classico area of Tuscany and adjoins Castello di Bossi and Tenuta di Renieri. The three estates form a single contiguous body.
The vineyards have aspects ranging from south-east to south-west. This range of exposures provides favourable sunlight conditions for grape ripening. The historic villa and other estate buildings stand within the surrounding Tuscan landscape.
Winemaking
Barbaione forms part of Bacci Wines’ organically cultivated vineyard holdings. Organic farming is tied to the group’s broader objectives of respecting the environment, preserving the landscape, and maintaining high production standards. The vineyard holdings are supported by sustainable energy.
Barbaione’s production identity centres on organic Metodo Classico sparkling wine made from Sangiovese.
Barbaione AD 1111 2018 is made entirely from Sangiovese and undergoes 48 months of maturation on the lees. The combination of the traditional sparkling-wine method and extended lees ageing is intended to develop finesse, complexity, structure, persistence, and aromatic depth.
The range also includes Barbaione Rose, presented as an organic rosé Metodo Classico sparkling wine.
Philosophy
Barbaione’s declared approach combines tradition and innovation, most visibly through the use of Sangiovese for Metodo Classico sparkling wine and extended lees maturation.
Within Bacci Wines, this approach is framed by organic production, respect for the environment and winemaking tradition, preservation of the surrounding landscapes, rigorous quality standards, and an emphasis on terroir and stylistic identity. Sustainability and responsible energy use form part of the wider production model.
