Cascina Roera

Origins\nClaudio Rosso's father was among the first local producers to bottle wine in the 1960s, at a time when most wineries in the area sold their wine in bulk.\n\nClaudio began experimenting with wine in 1985 as part of the family business and became a full-time winemaker in 2000. Piero Nebiolo also comes from a winemaking family and had been making wine independently as well.\n\n### Founding the winery\nIn 2002, Claudio Rosso and Piero Nebiolo, both young entrepreneurs already making wine on their own, founded Cascina Roera, believing that working together would help them improve quality further.\n\nTo focus on quality, Piero chose to concentrate on 5 hectares of vineyards, renewing some of the existing Barbera vines and planting other varieties, including Nebbiolo and Chardonnay.\n\n### Recent developments\nToday, the holdings of Cascina Roera cover a total of 7.5 hectares, all within the municipality of Costiglio d'Asti. The winery has been a member of the Vin Natur association since 2008.

The vineyards lie within the municipality of Costiglio d'Asti, in Piedmont. They have a range of aspects and soil structures, which contributes to the complexity of Cascina Roera's wines.

The vineyards are farmed using organic methods. Claudio and Piero chose not to pursue organic certification, because they do not believe a certificate alone provides consumers with a sufficient guarantee.

In the cellar, human intervention is kept to a minimum. The winery guarantees that sulfur is either not used or kept to a minimum in its wines.

Claudio and Piero believe that working together helps them improve wine quality further than they could working independently. They farm organically but hold that a certificate alone does not provide consumers with a sufficient guarantee, so they have chosen not to pursue certification. In the cellar, they keep human intervention to a minimum and guarantee that sulfur is either not used or kept to a minimum.
