About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Sangiovese comes from younger vineyards on the Castel Giocondo estate in Montalcino, at 250–450 m above sea level. The vineyards face south and southwest and are planted on rich soils.

Vinification

Most of the grapes are harvested by hand, with a small share picked mechanically. The wine macerates on the skins for 16 days and ferments for 13 days in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of no more than 30 °C. Malolactic fermentation follows.

Ageing

The wine ages for 12 months in Slavonian oak casks of 80 and 100 hL and in French oak barriques, then rests a further 4 months in bottle.

Tasting profile

Close in style to Brunello but younger and less complex. The wines from these younger vineyards are aromatic and elegant, with fewer tannins than Brunello.

Label / history

Frescobaldi, the Marchesi de' Frescobaldi family, has grown grapes in Tuscany for 700 years. In the 14th century it supplied wine to the English Crown and to other European courts. In 1989 it acquired the largest estate in the Brunello region.
