About this wine

Vinification

The Nebbiolo was harvested by hand in mid-October. The wine was neither filtered nor clarified.

Ageing

After ageing in barriques, the wine rested for 3–4 months in large stainless-steel tanks and then for around one year in bottle in the La Spinetta cellars.

Tasting profile

The 2001 vintage has a powerful nose of toasted oak and very ripe sweet fruit. The palate shows layers of sweet dark fruit, liquorice, menthol and spice, with pronounced tannins and a modern, very ripe style.

Label / history

The lion on the label reproduces a well-known drawing by the German artist Albrecht Dürer. Giorgio Rivetti’s fondness for Dürer’s work led La Spinetta to use reproductions of it on its labels; other wines feature a rhinoceros, although neither animal has a historical connection with the estate.

The 2001 release was the first vintage made after Giorgio Rivetti gained full control of the Grinzane Cavour vineyards in Barolo.
