Vineyard and terroir
The Barbera comes from the San Giacomo and San Luigi vineyards in the commune of Dogliani, at an altitude of 350 m. San Giacomo’s vines were planted in 1997 and 2004; those at San Luigi were planted in 1983 and 1999. The soils combine marl, limestone and clay, and yields are 65 hl/ha.
Vinification
Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 30 °C for 6–8 days. The wine is then racked and undergoes malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
The wine matures for 12 months in small French oak barrels, followed by several months in bottle.
Tasting profile
Rich and elegant, with an intense red-fruit aroma and a refined, soft tannin structure that develops over time.
Label / history
Luigi Einaudi was an economist, politician and journalist, and served as the second President of the Italian Republic from 1948 to 1955. He helped the country rebuild its economy and legal system after the Second World War while retaining a close involvement with his vineyards. In his native Dogliani he was respectfully called “the Professor” and was said never to have missed a harvest at San Giacomo.
San Giacomo, a 40-acre vineyard purchased by Einaudi in 1897, was his first vineyard and marked the beginning of Poderi Luigi Einaudi. The estate now encompasses 145 ha, of which just over 45 ha are vineyards. Its winery was completely rebuilt in 1993 and is located almost entirely underground to maintain constant temperature and humidity.
