About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The wine comes from 1.13 ha in Bussia Vigna Mondoca, within the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, identified as map sheet 2, parcels 178, 407 and 406. The vineyard lies at 380 m with a southwestern exposure. Planting is at 2.70 × 0.90 m, equivalent to 4,500 vines per hectare, with Guyot training on a vertical trellis. The vines are 35 years old. The wine page reports a yield of 65 quintals per hectare, while the technical sheet gives 50 quintals per hectare.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

Harvest takes place during the first ten days of October. Grapes are selected manually in the vineyard and again on a conveyor in the cellar. They are gently destemmed and softly crushed. Fermentation and maceration continue for approximately 30 days at a controlled 28–29°C. Malolactic fermentation follows in December.

Ageing

The wine matures for approximately 36 months in 30 hl oak casks and then continues ageing in bottle. In the best vintages it is released as Riserva after spending a total of 5 years in the cellar.

Technical data

Production is approximately 3,500 bottles.

Tasting profile

The bouquet is supple and elegant, combining small berries with natural balsamic tones, Mediterranean scrub and dried rose; with ageing, these aromas develop towards goudron. The palate is well balanced, with a tannic weave that is both fine and powerful, followed by a long, complex finish.
