About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The 0.7712 ha vineyard occupies the top of a hill in Serralunga d’Alba, on cadastral sheet 8, parcels 335 and 340. It faces due south at 360 m elevation and yields 50 q/ha.

Vine age varies by section. The large central portion was probably planted in 1972, before the Oddero family acquired the vineyard. Approximately 240 vines in the upper section were planted in 1983, while around 300 vines in the lower section date from 2007.

Grapes

100% Nebbiolo.

Vinification

Harvest takes place in the second week of October. Grapes are picked by hand into 18 kg crates, and bunches are selected manually. After transport to the winery, the fruit is selected again on a conveyor belt before destemming. The crushed grapes enter 50 hl fermenters for alcoholic fermentation and approximately 25–28 days of maceration, with daily pump-overs and wetting of the cap.

Ageing

After devatting, malolactic fermentation and racking, the wine matures in Austrian oak casks for approximately 40 months. Following bottling, it is stored at around 15 °C and 70% humidity.

Technical data

Average annual production since 2010 is 2,700–3,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

Deep, clear, intense garnet-ruby red. The complex bouquet brings together dark fruit, blackberry and citrus with rose, followed by balsamic tones of tobacco, liquorice and quinine, forest-floor nuances and wet limestone. The palate shows firm tannins, freshness, persistence and longevity.

Vintage notes

The Oddero family first produced Barolo Vignarionda in 1985. It was not made in 1992, 1994 or 2002; the 2003 production comprised only 1,200 bottles.
