About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Maestrino is the estate cru, made with grapes selected from the best-exposed, low-yielding sections of the 13.5 ha Poggio Maestrino vineyard. The site lies at an average elevation of 150 m, with eastern and western exposures and medium-textured volcanic soil.

The ten-year-old vines are planted at 5,000 vines per hectare and trained using both spur and cane pruning. Production is restricted to an average of 1 kg per vine to obtain greater concentration.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese.

Vinification

Harvest takes place in the second half of October. Maceration lasts 10–12 days at approximately 28°C, followed by malolactic fermentation in stainless steel.

Ageing

At least one year in tonneaux, at least six months in stainless steel and one year in bottle.

Technical data

Annual production is approximately 8,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

An intense, bright red wine built around complexity, structure and elegance. The enveloping, persistent aroma combines small red fruits and spices, with ripe cherry and Marasca cherry leading into a balsamic and spicy finish. Bottle maturation brings suppleness and a mellow, polished character.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16°C. Pair with substantial roasts, mature cheeses and wild boar.
