About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Vigneto Le Caggiole covers 14 ha, only part of which is in production, at 350 m above sea level on the road from Montepulciano to Gracciano. Though close to Asinone, it has a markedly different microclimate and geological profile. The vines face east.
The principal vineyard description characterises the ground as distinctly sandy and marine in origin; the technical specification describes marine-origin tuffaceous rock containing less than 15% clay. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, and the vineyard is more than 40 years old. Careful selection of Sangiovese clones and rootstocks, together with the planting layout and site conditions, shapes the wine’s character.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese.
Vinification
Harvest is manual into crates. A second manual selection takes place in the cellar. Fermentation and maceration proceed in truncated-conical stainless-steel vats for 18–22 days.
Ageing
Maturation lasts 16–18 months in 500–600 L French-oak tonneaux. Ageing potential exceeds 20 years.
Technical data
Average production is approximately 6,500 bottles. The present production began with the 2015 vintage, following an earlier production that started in 1988.
Tasting profile
An elegant, refined Sangiovese with a sweet-fruited impression, saline notes and particularly gentle tannins. Small, thick-skinned berries contribute depth, complexity, muscularity and integrity, while the overall profile remains poised rather than overtly powerful.
Vintage notes
The 2021 vintage marked the wine’s entry into the Pievi project and appeared with a new label from 2025. The project links wines to 12 historic, geographic and cultural subzones of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and applies stricter production rules and an additional external tasting assessment.
Label / history
The 2021 label introduced a more restrained, place-focused visual identity, signalling the wine’s formal association with Pieve Caggiole while preserving the identity of Le Caggiole.
