About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
Pira is a historic vineyard in Castiglione Falletto and has been a Roagna family monopole since its purchase in 1989. It faces south-east on the Serralunga and Perno slope and was formed by the geological breakdown of the Rocche di Castiglione.
Its Tertiary marine-sedimentary formation dates to the Helvetian era. The profile alternates between white limestone, grey marl, blue marl and sand and contains minerals including iron. Pira comprises seven hectares under vine and four hectares of woodland. The Rocche di Castiglione protect its upper boundary, while woods and a stream flowing from Bussia di Monforte influence the lower part.
Six micro-plots combine vines of different ages and soils ranging from limestone rock to bluish marl. The vines are of massal origin, propagated with wood selected while pruning old Pira vines. The oldest planting dates to 1937.

Vinification
Submerged-cap maceration lasts 80–90 days.
Ageing
Very long maturation takes place in oak casks, concrete and ceramic. The Riserva receives approximately ten additional years of cellar ageing before release.
Technical data
Production is limited to no more than a few hundred bottles.

Label / history
The wine belongs to the Riserva Etichetta nera series. Pira was historically owned by the Falletti family and later by Zocha, now called Zotta, and was once connected directly to the castle by a private road. The black label identifies Roagna’s Riserva releases.
