Vineyard and terroir
Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti is a selection of the oldest vines within the Pajé geographical mention. Pajé lies in the centre of the municipality of Barbaresco and has belonged to the Roagna family since 1953. Its name derives from the Piedmontese dialect and was historically used for the area's vineyards.
The vineyard forms a natural amphitheatre at an average elevation of 230 m, with south and south-west exposures. The gently sloping site is sheltered from the wind by surrounding hills and opens toward the Tanaro river valley, which moderates winter cold and summer heat.
Pajé has the highest limestone concentration among Roagna's historic vineyards. Its calcareous marl contains abundant active limestone. The soil is of Tertiary, or Cenozoic, origin and developed from marine sedimentation approximately 70 million years ago.
Grapes
The wine comes from the oldest vines in Pajé. The Vecchie Viti collection is based on vines of massal origin more than 50–60 years old, propagated with material obtained while pruning the same vineyard. Their developed root systems reach multiple soil layers for water and nutrients.
Ageing
Ageing lasts approximately five years on average in wood and concrete.
Technical data
Annual production is limited to approximately 2,000–3,000 bottles. The precise number made is printed on the label.
