About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

Effe 55 comes from a 2 ha selection at Casanuova di Pietrafitta in Castellina in Chianti. The vineyards stand at an average elevation of 580 m with a north-eastern exposure. The medium-textured soil contains sand and rock fragments, with Alberese predominating over calcareous-clay layers.

The selected vines are 25 and 50 years old. Part of the wine comes from one of the estate's oldest vineyards, planted in the 1970s and now more than half a century old. These mature, deeply rooted vines naturally produce small yields. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, average yield is 1 kg per vine, and the vines are spur pruned.

Grapes

100% Sangiovese, specifically a Sangiovese Grosso clone of the Montalcino biotype.

Vinification

Harvest takes place in mid-October. Native yeasts drive fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled 28°C, with maceration lasting 12–20 days. Malolactic fermentation also occurs in stainless steel.

Ageing

The wine matures for 15 months in tonneaux and another six months in 23 and 32 hl barrels, followed by at least 12 months in bottle.

Technical data

Stabilisation relies solely on natural methods and filtration is deliberately very loose. Natural sediment may therefore develop during extended bottle ageing without diminishing the wine's sensory qualities.

Tasting profile

The aromatic profile centres on small red berries and Marasca cherries preserved in alcohol, with chocolate-like nuances and well-integrated wood. Full-bodied, warm and powerful, the palate carries a pronounced tannic structure while retaining drinkability and elegance. Acidity and minerality bring freshness to the long finish.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16°C with stewed meats, game or mature cheeses. The wine is conceived for long ageing.
