About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The wine draws on all the estate's plots surrounding the medieval fortress and the village of Castagnoli. Together they cover 63 ha and vary substantially in exposure, elevation and geology. The narrative places the vineyards between 340 and 530 m, while the technical summary gives a range of 340–500 m.

Soils range from areas rich in Chianti Macigno and other sandstones to Alberese, limestone, Galestro-dominant schistous clay and other clay sequences. Vine age extends from new plantings to 35 years. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare and average yield is 1.5 kg per vine. Both spur and cane pruning are used.

Grapes

Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and other varieties.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested in October. Maceration lasts 10–12 days at approximately 28°C. Malolactic fermentation takes place in stainless steel.

Ageing

At least one year in traditional Chianti barrels, followed by three months in stainless steel and six months in bottle.

Technical data

Annual production is approximately 250,000 bottles.

Tasting profile

Red with violet reflections. The intense bouquet is fruity and vinous, with a clear cherry component. The palate combines complexity and structure with marked freshness and lively tannins that are well integrated with the wine's extract.

Serving and pairing

Serve at 16–18°C. Pair with white meats, medium-aged cheeses and roasts.
