About this wine

Vineyard and terroir

The Sangiovese grows in south-facing vineyards at Radda in Chianti (Siena), at elevations of 350–650 m. The well-structured clay soils contain the limestone characteristic of the Chianti Classico area. The vines are Guyot-trained.

Grapes

The wine is made exclusively from Sangiovese.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness. Traditional fermentation takes place in contact with the skins and is followed by malolactic fermentation.

Ageing

The wine matures for 12 months in Slavonian oak barrels, followed by three months in bottle.

Tasting profile

Elegant. The 2016 vintage has notable aromatic finesse and excellent balance.

Vintage notes

The 2016 growing season was highly favourable, with ideal conditions throughout the vine cycle. A mild winter and spring with seasonally typical temperatures led into a relatively hot summer with moderate rainfall, which provided sufficient moisture during ripening. Diurnal temperature variation and good ventilation kept the vineyards dry, allowing the Sangiovese to be harvested in ideal conditions.

The 2016 vintage received bronze at the International Wine & Spirit Competition and silver at the International Wine Challenge. In 2019, it received gold medals at the Asia Wine Trophy, Melbourne International Wine Competition and Mundus Vini.

Label / history

First produced in 1979. After belonging to several noble Tuscan families, the estate became part of the Zonin company that year. Gianni Zonin focused first on improving grape quality and then on restoring and developing the medieval estate. The Zonin family has continued to expand the vineyards and winery. The estate now covers 900 ha, of which more than 150 ha are planted with vines and olive trees.
