About this wine
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from a south-facing vineyard of just over 5 ha in the province of Siena. The site lies at the foot of a medieval village at 550 m above sea level and has rich, well-drained marl soils.
Vinification
Fermentation and maceration take place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks for three weeks, followed by malolactic fermentation.
Ageing
Half of the wine matures in barriques and half in large Slavonian oak casks for 14 months. It then rests in bottle for a further 18 months.
Label / history
The wine takes its name from the Santa Caterina vineyard. Castello di Albola belonged to several noble Tuscan families before Zonin acquired it in 1979. Gianni Zonin initially focused on improving grape quality and subsequently on restoring and developing the medieval estate. The Zonin family continues to expand the vineyards and winery. The estate now covers 900 ha, with more than 150 ha planted with grapevines and olive trees.
