Questo vino
Vineyard and terroir
The fruit comes from the estate's vineyards in the Casanuova di Pietrafitta area of Castellina in Chianti. The 2 ha vineyard lies at an average elevation of 580 m a.s.l. and faces north-east. Alberese predominates, accompanied by calcareous-clay layers; the soil is medium-textured and rich in sand and rock fragments.
The vines are listed as 25 and 50 years old, with part of the wine originating from one of the estate's oldest vineyards, planted in the 1970s. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare, and spur pruning is used. Naturally low yields average 1 kg per vine.
Grapes
100% Sangiovese, specifically a Sangiovese Grosso clone of the Montalcino biotype.
Vinification
Harvest takes place in mid-October. Maceration proceeds in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 28°C for 12–20 days, using native yeasts. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in stainless steel.
Ageing
The wine matures for 15 months in tonneaux and then for another 6 months in 23 and 32 hl barrels, followed by at least 12 months in bottle. Stabilization is carried out solely by natural methods, and only a very broad filtration is used. Natural sediment may consequently develop after prolonged bottle ageing without affecting the sensory profile.
Technical data
Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG. Vineyard area: 2 ha. Average altitude: 580 m a.s.l. Planting density: 5,000 vines/ha. Average yield: 1 kg per vine.
Tasting profile
The bouquet is marked by small red berries and Marasca cherries preserved in alcohol, with chocolate-berry nuances and well-integrated wood. The palate is full-bodied, warm and powerful. A pronounced tannic texture is balanced by elegance and drinkability, while good acidity and minerality sustain a fresh, long finish.
Serving and pairing
Serve at 16°C. Pair with stewed meat, game and mature cheeses.
Label / history
A portion of Effe 55 is sourced from vines planted in the 1970s. Their age, deep roots and low natural productivity contribute concentration and finesse. The wine is conceived as a long-lived expression of Capraia's high-altitude Sangiovese vineyards.
