Vineyard and terroir

This estate cru draws principally on the Pietrafitta and Canale areas of Castellina in Chianti, selecting Sangiovese from the oldest and best-exposed vineyards. The identified vineyard is in the Casanuova di Pietrafitta area. Pietrafitta lies in the upper part of Castellina in Chianti at approximately 530 metres. Its cool, ventilated north-eastern exposure encourages even ripening. Surrounding woodland preserves biodiversity while sheltering the vines and supporting plant health.

The medium-textured soil contains clay and the rock fragments typical of the Alberese area. The vineyards range from 10 to 35 years old, while the principal Sangiovese vines are described as averaging 20 years. Planting density is 5,000 vines per hectare and average yield is 1 kg per plant. Both spur and cane pruning are used.

Grapes

Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Malvasia Nera.
