Storia
Origins of Castiglioni
The village of Castiglioni, after which the estate is named, was first mentioned in 1078. It was founded by the monks of Badia a Coltibuono.
The Egger family and the founding of the winery
Austrian entrepreneur Karl Egger and his family had visited Tuscany for decades before settling on a small spot near the medieval town of Radda in Chianti, between Siena and Florence. They founded the winery there in 2012.
The Egger family restored the small village of Castiglioni, including its old chapel and the "Pian Vecchi" farmhouse, where a small number of white grape varieties were recently planted. Karl Egger invited his friend, the winemaker Sean O'Callaghan, to help him build a small artisanal winery.
Terroir
The estate lies in the heart of Chianti, near the medieval town of Radda in Chianti, between Siena and Florence. It covers around 100 hectares of wooded hills, small rivers and fertile plains.
Vinificazione
The vineyards are farmed using organic and biodynamic methods.
The winery is a small, artisanal operation. Nothing is added during the production of the wines, grappa or olive oils, and no artificial yeasts or fining agents are used.
Filosofia
The estate says its focus is on making pure, natural products. Karl Egger set out to build a small artisanal winery.
